Course Overview

Our goal is to educate the participants in the topics of genetic cardiomyopathies, heart failure and VADs, advanced aortic disease, mitral valve disease, and postoperative atrial fibrillation. Additional topics will include the prevention of stroke during cardiac surgery, implementation science, examining the opioid epidemic and improving inclusion, equality and diversity.


We will also discuss the history of the NHLBI Cardiac Surgical Network Clinical Trials (CTSN), it’s successes, study outcomes and future trials as well as hurdles to overcome when conducting clinical trials. The program will be taught by members of Penn Medicine and CHI St. Vincent faculty, as well as guest speakers from the NHLBI and CTSN.


The course is structured to meet the interests and educational needs of internists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and cardiovascular APPs.

Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Identify advances in Genetic Cardiomyopathy
  2. Apply new cutting edge PCI techniques
  3. Review and assess advances in the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation post cardiac surgery
  4. Describe the use of a heart pump in the treatment of cardiogenic shock
  5. Discuss therapies for advanced aortic valve disease
  6. Identify triggers for VADs advanced therapies for heart failure
  7. Identify advances in the use of mesenchymal stem cell therapy for treatment of myocardial infarction
  8. Identify approaches to functional MR in patients with heart failure
  9. Describe Neuroprotection & Stroke during cardiac surgery, new investigational devices
  10. Establish cardiac surgery opioid stewardship, patient evaluation and management strategies amidst an overwhelming national opioid overdose epidemic
  11. Identify the important approaches to improving inclusion, equality and diversity in the healthcare settings and clinical trials
  12. Discuss the history of the NHLBI Cardiac Surgical Network Trials
  13. Discuss challenges conducting randomized cardiac surgical trials and lessons learned

Penn Medicine and CHI St. Vincent Infirmary Symposium will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022 by in-person or live-stream (virtual) attendance. The live and virtual presentations will follow the scheduled agenda in real time (EDT).

REGISTRATION FEES
IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE:
The fees to attend in-person are as follows: $90 for physicians and industry attendees, $70 for nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals, and $50 for residents, fellows and students. The fee for Penn Medicine and CHI St. Vincent employees, faculty, staff, residents, fellows, and students to attend is $35.
 
All pre-registered, in-person attendees will receive access to the conference, virtual attendee booklet, continental breakfast, lunch, and breaks. Registration also includes access to view the presentations online for one year. Walk-ins are discouraged. Please be sure to register in advance.
 
TO ATTEND BY LIVE-STREAM (VIRTUAL):
Attendees who are registered to attend virtually will receive an email including the link to join the symposium 48 hours in advance. All virtual attendees will be required to sign into the meeting using your first name, last name and email address in order to be marked as attended, receive credit and view the recordings.
 
LIVE-STREAM (VIRTUAL) ATTENDANCE:
The fee to attend this symposium virtually is $45 for physicians, industry, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows and all other healthcare professionals, including Penn Medicine and CHI St. Vincent employees, faculty, staff, residents, fellows and students.
 
Registration is required to attend. All pre-registered virtual attendees will receive an email that includes a link with instructions to sign-in and join the virtual conference 48 hours preceding the symposium, as well as the virtual attendee booklet (downloadable PDF). Registration also includes access to view the presentations online for one year.

In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
 
DESIGNATION OF CREDIT
Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
 
Nurses: This program provides 7.5 NCPD hours.
 
Physician Assistants: Penn Medicine has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria.
