Course Overview
The overall goal of the Medical Education Journal Club is for the PSOM community to continue to be updated and knowledgeable about advances in medical education theory and practice and consider how this new information might inform medical education at Penn. The goal of journal club is to bring together educational leadership in PSOM with Penn faculty, fellows, residents and students who have interest and expertise in medical education. Journal club presenters are instructed to link concepts and ideas presented in the research they are reviewing to undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate educational programs at Penn. For example, topics may include how to teach clinical reasoning, diagnostic errors, and patient safety or how to promote wellness in the learning environment. Consideration is also given to important emerging concepts in medical education regionally and nationally.

Specialties - ANESTHESIOLOGY, DERMATOLOGY, EMERGENCY MEDICINE, FAMILY MEDICINE, INTERNAL MEDICINE, MEDICAL GENETICS AND GENOMICS - Molecular Genetic Pathology, NEUROLOGY, NUCLEAR MEDICINE, OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY, OPHTHALMOLOGY, OTOLARYNGOLOGY, PATHOLOGY - CLINICAL, PEDIATRICS, PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION, PREVENTIVE MEDICINE - Clinical Informatics, PSYCHIATRY, PSYCHIATRY AND NEUROLOGY - Addiction Psychiatry, RADIOLOGY - Nuclear Radiology, SURGERY, UROLOGY

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe factors that influence the learning environment and strategies to positively impact the learning environment
  2. Discuss approaches to assessment of clinical competence and modalities to assess competence
  3. Describe innovative approaches to medical education, particularly the use of innovative teaching methods that include technology

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.  

Designation of Credit
Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ABIM MOC: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.00 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. PAs may receive a maximum of 1.00 Category 1 credits for completing this activity.

Nurses: This program provides 1.00 NCPD Hours.

ABS MOC: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn 1.00 credits toward the CME and Self-Assessment requirements of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.
