Course Overview


This course is complimentary to participate on and is available ONLY to Penn Employees.
The goal of the educational activity is to change the paradigm towards more judicious opioid prescribing by providing an overview of the opioid epidemic and identifying strategies for clinicians to safely manage and treat acute and chronic pain, promote adherence to new prescribing guidelines and promote harm reduction with opioid use. New Joint Commission requirements issued January 1, 2018 mandate that our health system provide educational resources to address these key areas.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:


  1. Provide an overview of the opioid crisis on a national, state and local level.
  2. List pain mechanisms/pathways and multi-modal treatment strategies for pain.
  3. Review the new prescribing guidelines from the CDC and Penn Medicine.
  4. Explain the use of drugs that reverse toxic opioid effects and drugs utilized to combat opioid use disorder

Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
 
Nurses: This program provides 1.0 NCPD hours.
