Learning Objectives
  1. Review ADA guidelines and scientific evidence about when self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is appropriate for diabetic patients treated with insulin therapy and especially for those also treated with oral agents.
  2. Instruct patients on oral medications on desired frequency and timing of tests in order to guide medicine titration.
  3. Counsel patients with type 2 diabetes about the importance of weight loss – but not necessarily excessive loss.
  4. Emphasize the importance of regular exercise in achieving weight loss.
