Course Overview

Food is medicine. This course aims to educate health professionals about dietary choices and principles of healthy nutrition while empowering them with the skills and tools to manage and prevent hypertension in their patients and themselves, with particular attention to socioeconomic and cultural competence. The day will begin with lectures by physician experts highlighting the evidence for dietary guidelines on hypertension management followed by a hands-on, interactive cooking experience for participants with Vetri Community Partnership chefs and dietitians using the principles discussed in the didactics. At the end of the day, a panel discussion will focus on practical applications of culinary medicine in clinical practice through case studies. This activity is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals who treat patients with hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Review nutritional guidelines for hypertension and learn how to apply them in practice
  2. Analyze the relationship between food, the gut microbiome, and blood pressure control
  3. Recognize the dietary health disparities associated with the prevention and treatment of hypertension
  4. Apply culinary skills and culturally competent food choices for personal health and clinical practice

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.  

Designation of Credit
Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: This program awards 6.0 NCPD hours.

Physician Assistants: Penn Medicine has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with the AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 6.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Cancellation Policy
In order to process refunds for course withdrawals, cancellations must be received in writing by April 23, 2025 (subject to a service charge equivalent to 10% of the registration fee, but no less than $25.00). No refunds will be issued thereafter. 

The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will refund registration fees but is not responsible for related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines, and travel agencies.
