Course Overview

Food is medicine. This course aims to educate health professionals about dietary choices and principles of healthy nutrition while empowering them with the skills and tools to manage and prevent major chronic diseases in their patients and themselves. The focus will be on non-infectious chronic diseases with particular attention to socioeconomic and cultural competence and practical applications. The day will begin with lectures by physician experts highlighting the evidence for dietary guidelines on major cardiovascular and metabolic diseases followed by a hands-on interactive cooking experience for participants with Vetri Community Partnership chefs and dieticians using the principles discussed in the didactics. At the end of the day, there will be a panel discussion focused on practical applications to implement culinary medicine into clinical practice. This activity is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals who treat patients with chronic diseases.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Review nutritional guidelines for diabetes and cardiovascular disease and learn how to apply them in practice
  2. Review principles of culinary medicine and food preparation skills
  3. Identify cultural differences in food choice and address socioeconomic barriers to healthy food

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.  

Designation of Credit
Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: This program awards 6.0 NCPD hours.

Physician Assistants: Penn Medicine has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with the AAPA CME Criteria.
