Course Overview
The goal of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Summer Lecture Series is to provide a didactic series for fellows, faculty and staff (including Advanced Practice nurses and respiratory therapists) on topics in pulmonary and critical care medicine. These topics will broadly include basic science topics, pulmonary physiology, clinical management, patient safety and quality improvement, and professionalism. The program leadership will continually assess the needs of the fellows, faculty and staff through informal discussion, through review of fellow performance on in-service exams, and through review of outpatient practice charts

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Discuss how to initiate appropriate mechanical ventilator settings for a patient with acute respiratory failure.
  2. Describe how to appropriately order and interpret pulmonary function tests for an outpatient.
  3. Describe an asthmatic patient for level of control and adjust medications accordingly.

In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

ABIM MOC: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.00 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity.
