Course Overview
This is a biweekly conference (2nd and 4th Monday) in which Movement Disorders Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners, and fellows, together with Neuropsychologists, will review surgical movement disorders cases. Surgical options discussed will include unilateral or bilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus interna, or ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus, or MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy. Patient characteristics including age, diagnosis, goals and expectations, motor features with or without video presentation, non-motor features including cognitive or psychiatric symptoms, levodopa response, brain MRI, physical, occupational, and speech language pathologist evaluations, and neuropsychological testing will be reviewed. The group will develop a consensus surgical plan based on careful review of the data presented. Additionally, patients who have undergone surgery with suboptimal outcomes will be reviewed for potential surgical revision. Learning objectives will include identification of appropriate and inappropriate surgical candidates for each surgical option, surgical management of uncommon or challenging movement disorders cases, and management of patients with suboptimal response to surgical intervention.
