The LGBTQ+ Health Grand Rounds series is a recurring educational forum designed to advance health equity for LGBTQ+ populations. Each session features expert-led presentations, case-based discussions, and community-informed perspectives that explore the intersection of identity, health, and care delivery. The series aims to build clinical competence in providing affirming, inclusive care and to strengthen evidence-based practices across disciplines. Topics include mental health, gender-affirming care, policy impacts, and culturally responsive communication. This activity supports healthcare professionals in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to improve outcomes and reduce disparities for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Describe key health disparities affecting LGBTQ+ populations and explain their root causes within clinical and systemic contexts.
  2. Describe inclusive communication strategies that affirm sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression in patient interactions.
  3. Discuss how to apply evidence-based practices in the care of LGBTQ+ individuals, including mental health, preventive care, and gender-affirming treatments.
  4. Describe barriers to equitable care and develop strategies to address them within interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  5. Discuss how to implement changes in clinical practice that improve patient outcomes and foster culturally responsive, affirming care environments.


In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
