The Penn Center for Healthcare Improvement & Patient Safety (Penn CHIPS) invites you to register for an upcoming workshop on Statistical Process Control Charts led by Drs. Jessica Hart and Michael Posencheg.

SPC charts are essential tools for monitoring process behavior, identifying variation, and supporting quality improvement efforts in diverse settings—from manufacturing to healthcare and beyond. Through a blend of short didactic segments and engaging, practical activities, learners will explore:

· The core principles of variation (common cause vs. special cause)
· Different types of SPC charts (e.g., X-bar, p-chart, u-chart, etc.)
· How to read and interpret control limits and trends
· Real-world examples of SPC in action
· Common pitfalls and best practices in using SPC charts By the end of the session, participants will feel confident identifying signals of process change and making data-informed decisions using SPC charts.

Specialties - ALL SPECIALTIES

Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Define statistical process control (SPC) and its purpose in quality improvement.
  2. Differentiate between common cause and special cause variation.
  3. Identify key components of an SPC chart (e.g., centerline, control limits, data points).
  4. Describe when and why to use different types of SPC charts (e.g., X-bar, p-chart, u-chart).
  5. Apply rules for detecting special cause variation in SPC charts.
  6. Interpret real-world SPC charts to determine process stability.
  7. Recognize patterns that indicate process improvement or deterioration.
  8. Employ SPC charts to support data-driven decision-making.
  9. Discuss common misinterpretations or misuse of SPC charts.

The registration fee for all attendees is $50 EXCEPT for currently enrolled Penn CHIPS students.

The course will only seat 40 registrants.
