The 2025 Penn Kidney Transplant Symposium will provide an overview of kidney transplantation and instruction on the kidney transplant referral and evaluation processes as well as more advanced concepts such as living donor kidney transplantation, managing mental health issues in kidney transplantation, improving access to kidney transplantation for complex patients and an overview of exciting clinical trials in kidney transplantation at Penn that can benefit kidney transplant patients.

Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:


  1. Describe the identification of appropriate kidney transplant candidates and review the referral, evaluation and waitlist processes.
  2. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the NJ State Transplant Designee.
  3. Review paired kidney exchange and understand the associated positive outcomes.
  4. Discuss key psycho-social aspects of kidney transplantation including mental health assessment, social supports and coercion in the kidney transplant process for recipients and donors.
  5. Review post-transplant medications and compliance strategies.
  6. Identify strategies to improve access to transplant for complex patients including roles and responsibilities of referring patient care team and transplant center staff.
  7. Describe the potential impact of current Penn clinical studies for kidney transplant recipients.

In support of improving patient care, Penn Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.  

Designation of Credit
Physicians: Penn Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Board for Transplant Certification: As a designated Approved Provider by the American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC), Penn Transplant Institute grants up to 5.5 Category 1 Continuing Education Points for Transplant Certification (CEPTC) for this offering. Approval #208-54.

An accreditation application has been submitted with The National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists (NANT) for continuing education contact hours.

The 2025 Penn Kidney Transplant Symposium meets the requirements for the Annual Certification Program for NJ Transplant Designee.

Social Workers:
Pennsylvania: NASW-PA Chapter is a co-sponsor of this workshop. 5.5 CEs will be awarded for completion of this course. NASW has been designated as a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education for social workers (Section 47.36), Marriage and Family Therapist (Section 48.36) and Professional Counselors (Section 49.36) by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.

New Jersey: 2025 Penn Kidney Transplant Symposium, Approval #06252025-173, provided by Penn Transplant Institute is approved for continuing education by the New Jersey Social Work Continuing Education Approval Collaborative, which is administered by NASW-NJ. CE Approval Collaborative Approval Period: Wednesday, June 25, 2025 through August 31, 2026. New Jersey social workers will receive 5 CE credits for participating in this course.
