Special Course Requirements by State

Some states require their licensed physicians, regardless of discipline, to complete courses in specific content areas. These courses can be challenging to locate. For your convenience, we list those categories here. Just click the links below to find the courses under each. Most course are FREE, others may carry a registration fee.

License Renewal CME Requirements


Pennsylvania

State Board of Medicine


Physicians licensed in Pennsylvania must complete 100 credits of CME in the two-year licensure cycle (licenses expire on December 31 of each even-numbered year). The following specific requirements must be satisfied as part of the 100-credit total:

  • 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
  • 12 credits of required patient safety/risk management CME*
  • 2 credits of required opioid CME
  •  2 credits of required child abuse recognition and reporting (This training MUST be received from an approved provider on this topic)

  • The remaining 64 credits must be completed in either approved Category 1 or Category 2 CME activities
        o    Category 2 credits are self-reported.  Click here to download the form to report your category 2 credits

*Many of Penn's departmental regularly scheduled series (RSS), such as case and quality conferences, morbidity and mortality series, and tumor boards, as well as portions of conferences and symposia also carry as PSRM designation. New Jersey

State Board of Medical Examiners


Physicians licensed in New Jersey must complete 100 credits of CME in a two-year licensure cycle. The following specific requirements must be satisfied as part of the 100-credit total:

  • 40 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
  • 2 credits of required end-of-life care CME (for renewals starting in 2015 and every renewal thereafter)
  • 1 credit of required opioid CME (for license renewals starting in 2019 and every renewal thereafter)
  • The remaining 60 credits must be completed in either approved Category 1 or Category 2 CME activities

A One-time Cultural Competency Requirement

To meet the New Jersey State Board requirements, physicians must complete six (6) hours of cultural competency training. If licensed after March 24, 2005, these credits can be included in the 100-credit requirement for renewal. There are six topics that must be covered in accredited cultural competency CME:

  1. A context for the training; common definitions of cultural competence, race, ethnicity and culture; and tools for self-assessment
  2. An appreciation for the traditions and beliefs of diverse patient populations at multiple levels—as individuals, in families and as part of a larger community
  3. An understanding of the impact that stereotyping can have on medical decision making
  4. Strategies for recognizing patterns of healthcare disparities and eliminating factors influencing them
  5. Approaches to enhance cross-cultural skills, such as those related to history taking, problem solving and promoting patient compliance
  6. Techniques for dealing with language barriers and other communication needs, including working with interpreters

Delaware

Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline


• less than one year – you are not required to do Continuing Medical Education (CME)
• more than one year, but less than two years – you are required to complete 20 hours of approved CME

Active Physician’s must complete 40 hours of approved CME during each full licensure renewal period between April 1 and March 31 odd-numbered years (2019-2021, etc.).
The CME may include:
• Category 1 courses approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) or equivalent courses approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) are acceptable.
• Approved medical or osteopathic resident or fellowship training programs may be requested to submit proof of satisfactory participation in lieu of approved CME credits.
• Certification by the Medical Society of Delaware that you have completed such CME since the time of your last renewal of your registration shall be acceptable proof of completion of these requirements.

To renew your license, you are required to attest that you have completed mandatory training required by Delaware law on how to recognize child sexual and physical abuse, exploitation and domestic violence.  The mandatory training must meet the requirements of the Child Protective Accountability Commission (CPAC) and must:
• address how to recognize child abuse and domestic violence,
• provide Delaware-specific information on reporting child abuse, and
• last at least one hour.
